Spark shield (also called a spark guard or spark blanket) is a safety device used during track maintenance to contain sparks and molten debris generated by rail cutting, grinding, or welding. Its primary purpose is to prevent trackside fires in nearby vegetation and protect maintenance-of-way workers from hazardous welding flash and flying metal bits. This shield consists of; two 4’ x 6’ flame retardant, fibre-glass welding blankets mounted on 3 custom posts designed to be driven into the ground during field work.
